Amazon has unveiled Alexa+, its next-generation AI assistant powered by generative AI, promising a more conversational, capable, and action-oriented experience. Alexa+ is designed to be more intuitive and personalized, helping users stay entertained, organized, and informed while seamlessly managing smart home devices, making reservations, and assisting with shopping. With over 600 million Alexa-enabled devices already in use, this upgrade represents a major leap in AI-driven assistance.
More Natural Conversations with Alexa+
Alexa+ improves the way users interact with voice assistants by making conversations feel more natural. Unlike earlier versions of Alexa, which relied on precise phrasing, Alexa+ can understand half-formed thoughts, colloquial expressions, and complex requests. This makes interactions feel more like talking to a knowledgeable friend rather than issuing commands to a machine.
Alexa+ Takes Action, Not Just Answers Questions
One of the biggest advancements with Alexa+ is its ability to take action across a broad range of services. By leveraging large language models (LLMs) and Amazon Bedrock, Alexa+ can execute tasks across thousands of platforms. Amazon has introduced "experts"—specialized systems designed to handle different types of tasks, from making restaurant reservations on OpenTable to ordering groceries from Whole Foods Market or coordinating home security with Ring. This level of automation allows Alexa+ to manage complex tasks without user intervention.
Agentic Capabilities for Hands-Free Task Completion
A standout feature of Alexa+ is its new agentic capabilities, which enable it to complete tasks autonomously. For example, if a user needs an appliance repaired, Alexa+ can search for service providers, arrange an appointment, and confirm the booking—all without requiring constant oversight. This marks a shift from AI assistants that provide information to those that can independently execute tasks on behalf of users.
Personalization and Context Awareness
Alexa+ is designed to be highly personalized, remembering user preferences, past purchases, favorite music, dietary restrictions, and even important dates. Users can add personal details—such as family recipes or vacation plans—which Alexa+ can use to provide relevant suggestions. This personalization extends across multiple devices, allowing users to start a conversation on an Echo device at home and continue it on their phone or computer seamlessly.
Improved Smart Home Management
Smart home functionality gets a significant boost with Alexa+. Users can ask Alexa to move music between speakers, start a show on Fire TV, or check Ring security footage—all with a simple voice command. Alexa+ can also proactively notify users about events such as traffic delays or sales on desired items, making everyday life more convenient.
Alexa+ Extends Beyond the Home
In addition to home-based Echo devices, Alexa+ will be available on a new mobile app (on iOS and Android) and a browser-based platform at Alexa.com. Users can transition between devices effortlessly, with Alexa+ retaining context across different environments. This means users can begin an interaction at home and continue it in the car or at work without losing track of the conversation.
Alexa+ Pricing and Availability
Alexa+ will cost $19.99 per month, but Amazon Prime members will receive it for free as part of their membership benefits. The rollout will begin in the U.S. over the next few weeks, with an early access period prioritized for Echo Show 8, 10, 15, and 21 device owners. Those interested in gaining early access can sign up at www.amazon.com/newalexa.
With Alexa+, Amazon is aiming to redefine the role of AI assistants, moving beyond basic voice commands to a truly intelligent system that understands, acts, and adapts to users’ needs.
