Anthropic unveils "Claude Memory"

Created on October 24|Last edited on October 24
Anthropic has announced the rollout of memory for Claude, expanding availability to users on Pro and Max plans. This new feature is designed to make Claude more contextually aware over time, allowing it to remember projects, preferences, and ongoing work without requiring repeated explanations. The rollout began for Team and Enterprise users and is now reaching individual professionals using the premium plans.

Purpose and Function of Memory

Claude’s memory is aimed at professional and collaborative environments. It allows the assistant to retain information about clients, workflows, project details, and organizational goals. For teams using Claude in fields such as sales, product development, or executive planning, this means conversations can build upon previous context, reducing repetition and increasing productivity. Each project receives its own distinct memory file, ensuring that unrelated discussions remain separate and confidential.

User Control and Transparency

Anthropic has emphasized that memory is fully optional. Users can view, edit, or delete what Claude remembers through a summary interface in the settings menu. The system makes memory management transparent by allowing users to see what is stored and modify it directly. Enterprise administrators can also disable memory organization-wide if needed, ensuring compliance with company data policies.

Introduction of Incognito Chat

Alongside memory, Anthropic has launched Incognito chat mode. This feature lets users start fresh conversations that neither reference nor add to Claude’s memory. It is particularly useful for sensitive topics or temporary brainstorming sessions. In Incognito mode, conversation history and memory remain untouched, preserving privacy and confidentiality.

Responsible Deployment

Anthropic has taken a phased approach to the release of memory, focusing first on professional environments before broader expansion. This strategy reflects an emphasis on safety and appropriate use, ensuring that memory enhances productivity while avoiding risks related to personal or sensitive data.

How to Get Started

Users can enable memory in the Claude app settings, where past conversations will be analyzed to generate initial context. Once activated, users can ask Claude questions such as “what were we working on last week?” to retrieve remembered details. Anthropic has also provided tools for exporting or migrating memory between AI platforms, supporting interoperability and data portability.

How to Get Started

The introduction of memory marks a major step in making Claude more adaptive and collaborative. By allowing users to build continuity across interactions, Anthropic is positioning Claude as an AI assistant that learns and evolves within professional settings, helping teams sustain momentum and focus across complex projects.
