The Future of Music

Guetta sees AI as a major tool for artists, and mentioned that he believes every new music style has roots in a new technology. Looking back, one of the most revolutionary technologies of the century has been the internet.
The internet created a massive crisis in regards to music piracy, and ultimately Apple and Spotify came out as winners in finding a solution to the issue through streaming. The battle between Apple Music and Spotify has largely been one of building recommender systems, where users make purchasing decisions largely off the platforms ability to recommend personalized music; however, the future of music platforms could weigh more towards the platforms ability to generate/augment music and also solve the intellectual property concerns that will come with inevitable ability of ai to generate music.

Company Analysis

Diving deep into company activity, one of Apples most recent Acquisitions was Music AI.
Music AI developed technology that allowed users to dynamically generate soundtracks that change based off of the users interaction, and even allowed for changing the tune of the music based off different biometrics from the user like heart rate [2].
Last year, Spotify acquired Sonantic which synthesized audio of Val Kilmer’s voice in the movie Top Gun Maverick [3].
Spotify stated that it sees immediate application for the technology’s ability to generate realistic sounding voices, however, it seems likely that there will be long-term benefits for the purchase, and Spotify may have more application for the acquired assets than meets the eye.
According to Edward Balassanian, the CEO of Aimi which is an AI music platform for artists, its likely that most of AI’s application to music will focus primarily on building tools for artists, and enhancing the listening experience for listeners, and less so on generating new music in an end to end fashion.
Despite Edwards claims, the future is hard to predict, and uncertainty of an AI future is difficult to estimate.
