YouTube, established in 2005 and under Google's umbrella since 2006, has over 2 billion active users each month. Its worldwide impact is unmistakable, extending to almost every corner of the globe.
Despite Google's extensive technological capabilities, it is trailing OpenAI's ability to create advanced language models. Nonetheless, Google is moving quickly to not only develop new models but also integrate existing models into the large group of existing products within Google. Recently, Google announced that it would integrate Aloud’s voice dubbing service into YouTube.Emerging from Google's in-house incubator Area 120, Aloud uses AI to transcribe, translate, and produce dubbed versions of videos.
Global Translation
Voice dubbing is the process of replacing the original audio track in a video with a translated version. Traditionally, the task of voice dubbing is time-consuming and costly. Moreover, maintaining the emotional nuances and rhythm of the original speech in the dubbed version is challenging.
Aloud aims to streamline this process. It uses AI to transcribe the audio of a video, allowing creators to review and edit the transcription. It then translates the transcription and creates a dubbed version of the video.
By automating the process, Aloud can potentially make voice dubbing more efficient and accessible to more creators.
Aiding Creators
The value of Aloud is in its ability to aid creators in overcoming language constraints and expanding their content's accessibility. For instance, a history buff can share content globally, unrestricted by language, while educators can deliver digital skills curricula to a broader audience.
As Aloud is incorporated into YouTube, we might see an upsurge of multilingual content that pulls in diverse, new audiences.
The Race
In the AI race, OpenAI is innovating extremely quickly. Google, although lagging in model performance, seems to have an edge in how it can use AI to transform and enhance its existing services.
While OpenAI has focused on developing models and leveraging external partnerships for implementation, Google can readily deploy its AI technologies across its billions-strong user base, just like it’s integrating Aloud's AI-powered dubbing into YouTube
The AI race is not all about having the best model; the ability to use AI to accelerate existing businesses and create user value is also a nontrivial task that will likely decide the major winners in this AI race.
