OpenAI launches Scheduled Tasks in ChatGPT

A new feature for the blockbuster AI Application
Created on January 16|Last edited on January 16
Scheduled tasks in ChatGPT allow users to automate interactions and prompts, enabling the AI to perform specific tasks at designated times, either as one-time or recurring events. This new feature is currently in beta and is being rolled out for users on Plus, Pro, and Team plans, with plans for broader availability in the future. Supported across platforms like Web, iOS, Android, and macOS, this capability aims to help users streamline routine activities such as reminders, daily briefings, and language practice. While the Windows app does not yet support this feature, it is expected to be available later in Q1.

How Scheduled Tasks Work

Scheduled tasks function by allowing ChatGPT to run prompts at preset times, even if the user is not online. Tasks can be created via the ChatGPT interface or through direct conversation prompts. For example, you can instruct ChatGPT to provide daily news updates or remind you of an event. Once a task is completed, users are notified via email or push notifications.

Setting Up Scheduled Tasks

To create a scheduled task, users can navigate to their profile icon on the ChatGPT app or web interface and select the "Tasks" option. First-time users can choose from suggested tasks or create custom ones. For instance, you can set a task by asking ChatGPT directly, such as, “Remind me about my friend’s birthday on March 10th.” ChatGPT confirms the creation of tasks and provides tools to modify them later.

Notifications and Permissions

Scheduled tasks notify users when completed through push notifications or emails. Users must enable these notifications by adjusting settings on their browser or device. For example, enabling desktop notifications might require granting permissions through the browser, while mobile notifications are activated after granting permissions in the mobile app.

Managing and Editing Tasks

Once tasks are set up, users can manage them through the "Tasks" page on ChatGPT Web. This page allows users to edit, pause, or delete tasks as needed. To update a task, users can hover over it, click the pencil icon, and modify its name, instructions, or schedule. Additionally, users can customize schedules by following up directly in the relevant conversation where the task was created.

Limitations and Future Features

Currently, ChatGPT allows a maximum of 10 active tasks at a time. If the limit is reached, users need to pause or delete tasks to create new ones. Tasks use GPT-4o, meaning any usage limits on a user’s ChatGPT plan apply to scheduled tasks. Some features, such as voice interactions and file uploads, are not yet supported during the beta phase.

sFinal Thoughts

Scheduled tasks are a powerful addition to ChatGPT’s capabilities, offering convenience and efficiency by automating regular interactions. Although the feature is still in beta and has limitations, it holds promise for transforming how users engage with AI in their daily lives. Future updates are likely to bring enhanced functionality and broader compatibility across platforms.
