Like many places during the pandemic, workers at Apple were directed to work from home, but now that the cultural attitude towards COVID has shifted towards it being less of a threat, Apple wants it's employees back in office chairs at physical office locations. As it is right now, Apple employees are expected to come to the office three days per week, though some speculate that this is just one step towards eliminating the option to work from home all together.
Needless to say, employees at Apple are not happy about these prospects for a variety of reasons, including schedule flexibility issues, commute concerns, and more. Among these people is Ian Goodfellow, the (no-longer) director of machine learning at Apple. Ian Goodfellow was hired by Apple in 2019, his previous jobs being at Google and OpenAI; He is also responsible for the invention of GAN models.
Ian left Apple in solidarity with his fellow workers in protest of Apple's push towards returning to the office, and with his departure came a stronger wave of pushback from the large workforce.
Apple Together, an organized group of Apple workers formed from the #AppleToo movement, fights for the labor rights of all Apple employees, and have made it clear that they are starkly against Apple's encroaching return-to-office policy.
