Reddit has decided to acquire Spell, a machine learning platform company, to utilize their services for accelerating their existing and upcoming machine learning algorithms. The Spell team will work together with Reddit's product, safety, and ads teams to enhance the broader user experience on Reddit.
Changes to the Reddit platform with new ML algorithms could include improvements with customized ad placement, automated and contextual community moderation, and more. Spell's software and team will allow Reddit engineers to explore new ideas quicker, experiment across the platform, and push improvements while staying ethically responsible according to Reddit's own standards.
Unfortunately for other companies who might be interested in partnering with Spell, they've halted onboarding new commercial customers with this acquisition by Reddit.
