Ayar Labs was fortunate enough to raise $130 million last month, a funding round in which NVIDIA participated. Today, they've got something more to announce in relation to their relationship with NVIDIA: A full-on partnership to drive the development and implementation of their optical I/O technology in future NVIDIA infrastructure for AI.
As AI processing chips grow larger, the requirement for fast communication to components like memory becomes more and more of a bottle-neck. NVIDIA sees promise in Ayar Labs' solution, enough to not only funding massive amounts of money to them, but collaborate personally in the drive for enabling this technology to it's fullest potential.
It's simply a fact that electricity-based communication methods will have to be phased out if we intend to continue to grow machine learning systems; The logical way forwards is the jump to light-speed optical based communications, and that's what this partnership represents.
