Coming off of yesterday's announcements regarding improvements to DALL·E's bias mitigation methods and related safe use filters, OpenAI is opening DALL·E to beta access and plans to bring on 1 million new users from the waitlist in the coming weeks. Additionally, a new credit-based system for using DALL·E has been implemented, and commercial usage rights for using the generated images have been outlined.

Using DALL·E in beta access

In the first phase of the beta, here's what you can expect to see:

Using DALL·E credits

As the userbase for DALL·E grows by a million in the coming weeks, they've chosen to implement a credit-based system for limited the amount of images a user can generate. This is a reasonable decision as DALL·E is a huge model which requires a considerable amount of power consumption to run, especially on a userbase of millions.
Prior to the beta, while not limitless, users could generate a very large amount of images freely, but now they will have to redeem DALL·E credits to do it. Users will get 50 free credits in their first month, and 15 free credits in subsequent months. Beyond that, most users will have buy more credits at $15 for 115 credits.
A single credit is used when a user generates new images or generates new variations. Since 4 images are created per prompt, 1 credit will give you a total of 4 images. That's 200 images in your first month, 60 images in subsequent months, and 460 images per $15 credit pack you buy beyond that.
Subsidies for qualifying artists are also available. If you'd like more information on credit subsidies, you can fill out the form here.

Using DALL·E commercially

Users will now have full usage right for any and all images generated by DALL·E for any projects, including commercial projects such as prints, storyboards, design, and any other usage that would be considered commercial. This means you can actually make money selling the content you've used DALL·E to create.

Using DALL·E safely

Guidelines for proper and safe use of DALL·E and the systems surrounding it are securely in place to prevent potentially harmful misuse. This includes uploading likenesses of real people, the generation of explicit and violent art, and more.
Techniques have also been recently implemented into DALL·E which reduce the bias of generated images on prompts which do not specify race or gender, but which might stereotypically bias itself to represent a single kind of person, like "CEO" or "teacher".
Human and automated systems will continue to ensure the proper use of DALL·E.
