It's not often you hear about AI advancements in the sports industry, but the appeal is clear: With AI vision analysis, amateur players could get personalize insights on their performance, something often limited to those in higher skill brackets and with more resources. Sometimes we might think about AI robots playing sports and games, but maybe the real innovation is supporting aspiring human competitors instead.
Wingfield has dedicated themselves to this exact goal of supporting everyday tennis players with AI-powered analytics. With a hardware installation on any standard court, computer vision AI is able to watch players to analyze their movements and offer insights to what they can improve on. With an accompanied phone app, players can have their performance tracked over time and easily compare with others.
Who's funding Wingfield and where's the money going?
Wingfield has announced the completion of a Series A funding round totaling €4 million (around $4.27 million). The round was led by bmp Ventures with additional participation from IBG_Fonds, Adesso Ventures, IeAD Sports & Health Tech Partners, and Hannover Beteiligungsfonds.
With the money, they plan to grow their presence in the European market to fill demand, as well as expand into the US market. Improvements to their product will also take place.
