As the title suggests, Microsoft is discussing investing $10 billion (USD) in OpenAI. Following OpenAI's GPT series, DALL-E, and now ChatGPT, it's foreseeable that it would draw lots of attention from competitors and large corporations. Remarkable feats like question answering, code writing, search, writing, and simulating whole operating systems foreshadow the future capabilities of AI for improving existing systems in large tech companies and, in general, the public.
Microsoft invested $1 billion (USD) in OpenAI in 2019. Now with OpenAI's even greater influence in driving chatbots to the next level and art generation, it's very likely that even greater funding will go into OpenAI and this discussion will turn into reality.
There's a lot of speculation surrounding further funding. OpenAI is a mix of nonprofit and for-profit. With Microsoft's investment and OpenAI's plan to develop a premium subscription service of sorts, what could this further funding entail?
Could it encourage this type of limited-access, paid subscription service? Will new models ever be shared with the public? What could this mean for its applications?
ChatGPT has proven to be a versatile (and unfair) tool in schools! Why spend 5 hours writing an essay on Hamlet when ChatGPT can regurgitate a 3-page essay in a minute? Why browse Google for an answer to a physics question when ChatGPT can provide context as to why and how your answer was wrong? These are only a few specific applications of ChatGPT that challenge the typical classroom.
Internal regulation of the actual system and external regulation will be needed. Existing plagiarism checkers and detectors will have to accommodate the upgrades in AI chatbots.
AI is swarming with innovation, and there are a lot of implications to consider! AI is an emerging tool for the public, and being aware of its existence, use, and limitations is crucial to applying it for the benefit of everyone!
