Roblox is a gaming platform where creators can create their own Roblox games for others to play and enjoy. These games require some skill in programming and game development.
As announced today, Roblox plans to incorporate generative AI tools to help flatten the initial learning curve for beginning creators.
Some of the tools they plan to introduce include a programming assistant much like GitHub Copilot and perhaps ChatGPT. Since their audience is largely kids, this generative AI mediator between English and programming syntax is a great beginner tool for kids to start developing games. There is speculation that this type of tool may take away game designer or developer jobs.
And though not impossible, it's unlikely that generative AI systems would be able to capture the design complexity of games perfectly. If anything, a programming assistant tool like Roblox's up and coming feature would shift the distribution of work a developer needs to output to different tasks.
In the future, I could also see other tools that can provide great starter templates for even designing games or maps or characters. Kind of like GauGAN, the user can input text and maybe a skeleton drawing of what they want and the AI can generate a high quality version of it designed and fitted for their specific Roblox game.
Of course, this kind of tool is similar to how generative art models like Stable Diffusion and DALL-E are disrupting the art world. Moderation, especially with a younger audience, would be important here for any type of generative AI tool whether it codes or generates designs, maps, and images. A balance between manual development and AI-backed development will need to be struck.
