Chatgpt Pulse enters preview: A daily AI assistant that works proactively for you

Created on September 25|Last edited on September 25
A new experience is coming to ChatGPT users with the launch of Pulse, a feature designed to shift the assistant from being reactive to proactive. Traditionally, ChatGPT has only engaged after a user asked a question, but Pulse changes that by initiating updates and research based on a user’s interests, conversations, and connected apps.

Personalized daily updates

Pulse delivers curated updates once a day in the form of visual cards. These updates are generated from a blend of chat history, user feedback, and optional app integrations. For example, if someone is training for a triathlon, Pulse could surface daily training suggestions or healthy meal ideas. By connecting Google Calendar or Gmail, users can also receive reminders, agenda drafts, or recommendations tied directly to upcoming events.

Curation and feedback

One of the central elements of Pulse is customization. Users can shape what appears by giving feedback through simple actions like a thumbs up or thumbs down, or by explicitly requesting what they want Pulse to research for the next day. This ongoing feedback loop helps refine the assistant’s relevance over time, making each day’s edition more tailored to personal goals and routines.

Focus on utility over engagement

Unlike feeds designed to keep people scrolling, Pulse is structured to deliver concise, useful information for the day. Updates disappear unless saved, which keeps the experience focused and avoids creating an endless stream of content. The intention is to give users just what they need before they move on with their day.

Insights from early use

OpenAI tested Pulse with college students in the ChatGPT Lab to refine the experience. Many users reported the feature became more useful once they actively guided it with preferences and requests. Students highlighted how Pulse helped them take logical next steps they hadn’t considered, such as optimizing travel planning around train ticket releases or surfacing resources at just the right time.

Limitations and next steps

As a preview release, Pulse is not always accurate and may occasionally serve outdated or irrelevant suggestions. OpenAI notes that it will learn and improve with continued use. The long-term vision is for ChatGPT to evolve into an assistant capable of not just researching but also planning and acting on behalf of users across more apps and contexts.
