Google Layoffs and the Machine Learning Market
Much like Microsoft, twitter, Meta, and more, Google has unfortunately laid off thousands of workers. ChatGPT and Microsoft may rival Google's search engine.

Google laid off about 12,000 jobs, over 6% of their workforce, focused in their data platform for care sectors. Google's CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized AI to be a key area for investment. Google is witnessing layoffs much like all the other big tech companies. It's hard to pinpoint the exact factors but general consensus is that over the pandemic, companies were over-hiring. And perhaps Microsoft's partnership and investment talk with OpenAI and their recent superhuman search engine chatbot ChatGPT influenced Google's now stronger emphasis on AI and improving their main product: Google search. Microsoft plans to add ChatGPT to their cloud service Azure. Google's DeepMind company, popular for papers like AlphaGo and AlphaFold, is set to launch a ChatGPT rival called Sparrow.
